Muharram is one of the most important days observed among the Muslim community. It marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. Muharram 2024 particularly holds great significance as it includes Ashura 2024, a profound day of historical and religious importance.
Ashura 2024 Date In India
The Islamic calendar is believed to follow the lunar cycle, due to which, the Muharram dates keep changing every year in the Gregorian calendar. In Saudi Arabia, the crescent moon for Muharram was earlier expected to be seen on the evening of Friday, July 5, 2024, which was the 29th day of Dhul Hijjah. However, when that didn’t happen, the Saudi Arabia authorities announced that the 1st of Muharram 1446 would begin after evening prayers on Saturday, July 6, 2024. This makes July 7, 2024, the first day of Muharram in Saudi Arabia, according to the Gregorian calendar, marking the start of the Islamic New Year 1446.

The same applies to other Western countries like UAE, USA, and Oman that follow Saudi Arabia’s moon sighting. In countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, India and other South Asian Nations, the crescent moon is usually sighted a day later. But since the crescent moon was not seen after evening prayers on July 6, 2024, in these countries, July 7 will be the last day of Dhul Hijjah 1445, and Muslims will celebrate the Islamic New Year 1448 on July 8, 2024.
Ashura 2024, the 10th day of Muharram, will be observed on July 17, 2024. These dates are determined based on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Do you know that the Shia Muslim community mourns on the 10th Day of Muharram, which is also called Ashura? On this day, the community mourns the demise of Hussain Ibn Ali, the son of Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad from the Karbala battle. Hussain Ibn Ali was killed in Karbala while fighting the army of Yazid in 680 AD. Therefore, the 10th day of Muharram, i.e., the Day of Ashura is observed to remember the brave sacrifice of Hussain.
