Macau’s economy secretary has emphasised the need to address rising demand for an Islamic dietary at a recent ceremony that recognised the culinary offerings of 17 enterprises in the city.
17 businesses, 12 of them food factories and five restaurants, were each awarded an accreditation by the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong on Thursday.
During the Halal Certificate Presentation Ceremony and Introduction to the Halal Certification Application Process organised by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute on Thursday, Lei Wai Nong, the Secretary for Economy and Finance, told participants that the city would welcome a “more diverse clientele”, and that the demand for services such as “halal-certified food and dining” would increase.
International tourist visits to Macau in May accounted for more than 60 per cent of the 2019 level, the latest government figures show.
According to the Statistics and Census Service, Macau recorded 184,854 international arrivals last month. The authorities are striving for a return to the 2019 level of three million by the end of next year.
As many as 169,957 visits to Macau were from Indonesia in 2019, while 206,277 came from Malaysia. The former dropped to 142,944 in 2023, while the latter dipped significantly to 99,851.
