Algiers, Algeria | July 4th, 2024 — On Wednesday, the rectorate of Djamaâ El Djazaïr organized a scientific conference examining the pivotal role of religious institutions in Algeria’s liberation. Held at the cultural center of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, the event coincided with the celebration of the Islamic New Year 1446 and the 62nd anniversary of Algeria’s Independence Day.
Spiritual Resistance as a Pioneer Force
Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, rector of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, emphasized the pioneering role of spiritual resistance in defending Algeria and preserving Islam. He highlighted that this resistance was rooted in “scientific, social, and jihad citadels for Islam and the homeland,” which maintained their missions of spiritual and patriotic resistance until the outbreak of the liberation war. Students, disciples, and followers of these citadels actively participated in the war, with some citadels serving as refuges for mujahideen and as centers for support, supply, and armament. These institutions were bastions of civilization and defenders of national identity, shielding the populace from the dangers of Christianization and Westernization, and protecting generations from alienation.
The Supreme Goal of Protecting National Religious Reference
Reflecting on the historical role of Algeria’s religious institutions in social reform and cultural resistance, Sheikh Al Kacimi asserted that today, these institutions are expected to continue their mission. They aim to protect the national religious reference, preserve societal cohesion, combat extremism and fanaticism, and promote values of moderation, tolerance, cooperation, and solidarity.
Zaouïas and Quranic Schools: Reservoirs of Patriotism
Yacine Benabid, director of the cultural center of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, affirmed that zaouïas and Quranic schools were true reservoirs of patriotism. He noted that their disciples have always been integral to the national movement in intellectual, educational, and formative aspects. Professors Ghali Gharbi from the University of Médéa and Mohamed Zekkouk from the University of Khemis Miliana also stressed the importance of deepening research on the followers and achievements of Algeria’s religious institutions. They highlighted the need to honor figures like Sidi Abderrahmane Thaâlibi, who opposed all aggression against Algeria.
Emphasis on Historical Research and Legacy Preservation
The conference underscored the vital role of religious institutions in Algeria’s history and their ongoing significance in national identity and social cohesion. It called for continued research and recognition of the contributions of religious figures and institutions to the country’s liberation and development.
