It was validated at the Court of extensive the arrest of BT, a 39-year-old man of Tunisian origin, already detained in prison, on charges of association with the aim of terrorism and incitement to commit crimes aggravated by the aim of terrorism. The measure was requested by the District Prosecutor’s Office of L’Aquila, at the end of a complex investigation conducted by the soldiers of the Special Operational Group (Ros) of the Carabinieri.
BT, domiciled in a reception center in the Teatro area and employed by a local company, was at the center of an investigation which began when ROS investigators detected virtual contact between him and Abdessalam Lassoued, an Islamic State terrorist. Lassoud, also Tunisian, was responsible for the terrorist attack on 16 October 2023 in Brussels, where, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, he killed two Swedish citizens before being shot down by Belgian police.
The connection on social networks between BT and Lassoued kicked off the investigations aimed at exploring the attacker’s friendship circuit and verifying the existence of any threats in the area. The evidence collected led to a search during which a significant quantity of computer material was seized. From this material emerged an intense process of Islamist “self-radicalization” on the part of BT, as well as continuous propaganda activity in favor of jihadist organizations recognized as terrorist by the European Union.
According to the investigators, IT carried out a real activity of promoting the subversive jihadist program, relaunching numerous propaganda posts from online subjects, using the internet as a “sounding board” for violence and hatred. The target of his activities were his “friends” on social media, mainly Arabic speaking, both in Italy and abroad. BT tried to influence them by publishing anti-Semitic, anti-Western and military jihad images against the “infidels”, promoting the idea of martyrdom and the global caliphate.
